About the Event
Remember the crocks of sauerkraut and fermented pickles your grandmother and great grandmother always had around? It sounds stinky – and maybe a little scary – but the tangy cabbage and crunchy pickles of your childhood are fermented. Today, science continues to find evidence that suggests fermented foods benefit our digestive health. These days we eat significantly more processed foods than our grandparents did, but fermented foods* can help our body maintain healthy digestive and immune systems. Our March 13 Ag & Stewardship Workshop is here to help!
Join us at Founders Station (4902 Pike Rd) from 4 – 7 p.m. for Home Produce Fermentation, and prepare to ferment your way through the produce aisle. Food Safety & Quality Extension Agents Janice Hall and Angela Treadaway will lead the workshop and discuss proper preservation procedures for preparing fermented foods and Kombucha, a fermented tea. Each person will make a jar of sauerkraut to carry home and ferment, and there will be samples of fermented products to try.
This workshop costs $10 per person to cover the cost of supplies. Seats are limited, and pre-registration is mandatory. To register, visit Pike Road Town Hall (9575 Vaughn Rd) on weekdays from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Please be prepared to pay the $10 registration fee via cash or check at the time of registration. The deadline to register is 5 p.m. on March 6.
